Angel's Heart (Angelim Pedra)

The species Hymenolobium Petraeum or Angelim Pedra which is known in the US as Angel's Heart is quickly becoming our most popular alternative to IPE. Rated at 20 plus years for service and at less than one half the cost of IPE, this is an exotic wood that competes with any decking material on the market today in cost and far exceeds them in performance.

Angelim Pedra by comparison to IPE is less dense but still provides longer lasting life and durability when sided against most domestic species. This attractive exotic wood has similar characteristics to that of Cedar, yet spans on farther joist centers in a decking application as the modulus of elasticity for this wood exceeds 2,000 psi. As an alternative to IPE, Angelim Pedra is cheaper, lighter in weight and easier to work with; however, cutting with carbide tipped blades and pre-drilling is still recommended unless you are using our "no pre-drill" ejector screws. Angelim Pedra/Angel's Heart is Kiln Dried to 12-14% MC which allows it to be used successfully.

The heartwood displays a light yellowish brown to a blondish pale brown overtone with a distinctive characteristic that truly sets this species apart from any other; throughout each board one will find brown "splatters" that are its' mineral deposits. Randomly placed along the irregular grain this unique feature really appeals to homeowners and designers who are trying to find that exotic look.
